Educator

A natural educator, I have tutored teen and college students, player-coached sports teams, and spent three years as a teacher and department head at the Birch Wathen Lenox School in New York City.

My favorite experiences as an educator are when I get to deliver exciting seminars and intensives focusing on the intersection of art and science. Some of these are described below.

Corvallis Youth Symphony Association Guest Educator

I am a reoccurring Guest Educator at the Corvallis Youth Symphony Association’s Summer Strings Academy. Seminars in past years have focused on jazz, blues, improvisation, Celtic fiddle, Old Time American fiddle, and music theory.

Keep Calm and STEAM On Summer Camp

A grant from Lane County funded this summer camp for middle schoolers from groups underrepresented in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) fields. Over the course of the experience, campers learned to 3D print fidget spinners, design and fly airplanes, produce electronica, circuit-hack their own toys, and program robots.

Your Brain, the Instrument

In this seminar, delivered to middle- and high-schoolers at the Birch Wathen Lenox School in Manhattan, I took students through the design and implementation process of building a neuro-musical interface utilizing an EEG (electroencephalography) machine and DAW (digital audio workstation).
